Ossett United 1-3 AFC Fylde

National League play-off finalists and FA Trophy holders AFC Fylde came out on top against Ossett United in a pre-season friendly at Ingfield.

Goals from Ryan Croasdale, Nick Haughton and, after Tom Greaves had got United back in the game, Kurt Willoughby gave the away side the win.

Fylde got of to the perfect start with a goal inside the first two minutes of the match. Haughton pulled the ball back to Croasdale, who expertly placed a finish into the corner from the edge of the box.

The extra quality of the Coasters was showing as they looked the stronger side for much of the first half. Brett Souter denied Haughton and Jordan Williams put a glorious chance wide from close range before a fortunate second goal.

Haughton whipped the ball across goal from the right, but it took a slight deflection off Myles Foley which left the goalkeeper with little chance of keeping it out.

Nick Guest headed wide from a difficult position in the closest effort of a difficult first half for Ossett, in which they had to deal with the loss of defenders Chris Chantler and James Knowles, while Andy Monkhouse cleared Haughton’s shot off the line to keep it at 2-0 going into the break.

The home side looked more confident after half-time, playing well on the ball. One nice passing move around the edge of the box ended with Jack Vann laying the ball off to Greaves in a good position, but the striker’s effort was blocked.

Just a few minutes later, Guest came close when he took the ball into the penalty area and fired a strike just past the far post.

Haughton wasn’t far from getting his second goal of the game for Fylde when his shot went just the wrong side of the post, but moments later Ossett were back in the game.

Vann was fouled by Willoughby 30 yards out, and the resulting free kick was whipped in by the left foot of Luke Porritt. It came off the head of a defender on its way to Greaves, who controlled the ball on his chest before finishing past Fylde goalkeeper Dan Lavercombe.

There was some confusion at first as the assistant put his flag up, but things were quickly set straight and the goal was given.

Ossett were looking to get forward more in search of an equaliser but their opponents were equal to everything thrown at them.

Instead the best chances came at the other end, where Willoughby’s drive hit the post before the substitute wrapped up the win in the final minute of the match. Danny Philliskirk’s shot from distance was fumbled, allowing Willoughby to tap home the rebound.

A great test for United and one they stood up to in a game won by the favourites to play League football next year.  United okay a Huddersfield XI on Tuesday night at Ingfield followed by a game against Farsley Celtic on Friday. Venue to be announce Monday for this fixture.
